Surat: Patidars disrupt BJP Yuva Morcha event, set buses on fire”

The buses were set ablaze Tuesday night in Surat city, about 284 km south of Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat.

To bring the situation under control, police used lathi-charge and also detained around 10 persons, said a PTI report.

Ahead of high profile visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japan counterpart Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, tension gripped Gujarat's Diamond city where youth BJP workers and Patidar agitation activists clashed that led to rioting in Patidar dominated Varachha area of the city. "No one was injured in the incident", a police official said. "The situation is now under control in Kapodra area as well as rest of the city", Surat Police Commissioner Satish Sharma said.

Subsequently, cops detained more than 20 members of the Patel community, which seems to have furthered angered the Patidars, who are on warpath with the ruling BJP in the state.

Following the youths' arrest, community leader and the face of the Patel reservation agitation, Hardik Patel sent out a threatening tweet.

Hardik Patel later claimed in a statement that the protest was peaceful and the police used baton charge for no reason. He tweeted a warning, saying, "There will be a stir in Gujarat if those detained are not released soon". Here, too, a number of preventive detentions were made, the Hindustan Times reported.

The police have stationed additional officers across Surat to avoid further untoward incidents.

Surat has over 1 million population of Patels also known as Patidars. "Otherwise, the entire Patel community is with us", said Rutvij Patel, president of state BJP's youth wing.
