Target hiring thousands for holiday season”

Target is hiring more than 100,000 temporary workers for the holidays - a sharp increase over past year.

In addition, Target will hire 4,500 team members at the company's distribution and fulfillment centers to replenish products to stores and fulfill digital sales throughout the season.

Target previous year hired 70,000 in-store workers for the holiday period, hiring cautiously along with others such as Macy's Inc M.N. , as most retailers planned for subdued sales amid growing competition from Amazon.com Inc AMZN.O .

Hiring events for store positions will be held at each of Target's 1,816 stores from 10 a.m.to 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13 through Sunday, Oct. 15. Current Target employees can also add extra holiday hours to their schedules.

The temporary workers get a few benefits, including a 10% discount at the store and online, and 20% for fruits, vegetables and other "wellness" products.

Target stock surged 5% from November through the end of a year ago during the holiday rush.

Retailers make almost a third of their annual sales and generate almost 40 percent of their profits during the holiday selling season, which starts a day after Thanksgiving and continues into early January.
