Telangana makes Telugu must up to Inter”

In a bid to promote Telugu language and its education in the state, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao has issued orders making the regional language a compulsory subject from standard 1 to 12 across all educational institutions in the state.

The Chief Minister further said that schools failing make Telugu mandatory will be de-recognised and not allowed to be function in the state.

A senior official in the education department told TOI that the schools will have to obey the directions and there is no other option available for them, both in the government and private sector.

It was also decided the only educational institutions that teach Telugu as a compulsory subject would be given recognition and permissions to function.

Another official said that the chief minister directed that for necessary amendment in the law, the decisions will be placed before the next cabinet meeting. "If required, the government will bring about a legislation in this regard".

The government will be strict in implementing the policy that Telugu is taught as the compulsory subject and only the syllabus framed by the Sahitya Academy is taught in educational institutions, the CM declared.

In addition, Rs 5 crore will be given to the Sahitya Academy which is the nodal organisation for the conference, and Rs 2 crore will go to the Official Language Committee.

The Telangana government is set to conduct a five-day World Telugu Conference from December 15 to 19. He said that the names of the organisations must be displayed in Telugu.

The CM appointed noted literary personality Sri Nandini Sidhareddy as Chairman of the Telangana Sahitya Academy.
