The Machines brings AR competitive gaming to iPhone

The Machines brings AR competitive gaming to iPhone”

Apple revealed perhaps the best showcase for its impending augmented-reality tech yet at its press conference earlier today.

The Machines, which takes advantage of Apple's ARKit, looks like a real-time strategy game where you strategically maneuver a handful of units to overtake your opponent. Impressively, the game's volume increases the closer you are to the action and in-game interferences, like mountains, will muffle the battle's audio if the player is stood behind them.

Directive Games CEO Atli Mar showed off the tank battle game at Apple's big iPhone 8 introduction event at its headquarters in Cupertino, California.

What you may not be able to fully get from the picture above: The augmented reality feature would allow baseball fans to point their camera at the field and see stats and player information. Atli Mar worked at CCP Games for a long time.

After describing the recently unveiled iPhone 8 as the first smartphone designed for AR, Apple demonstrated exactly how its ARKit and Metal 2 API can open the door for developers looking to build an AR game for iOS.

The developers of The Machines expect the title to be available on the Apple App Store later this month when the iOS 11 update rolls out. You can also tap on any building to see a little overview of what's inside, and get visualizations of how solar power is collected by the cells on the buildings' roofs, as well as how air moves across the structures.
