UN Approves Watered-Down New Sanctions Against North Korea”

The UN Security Council unanimously approved tougher sanctions against North Korea on Monday because of Pyongyang's sixth and strongest nuclear test on September 3, under which the United Nations imposed a ban on textile exports and restrictions on crude oil imports.

US lawmakers called on Tuesday for a "supercharged" diplomatic response to North Korea's nuclear tests and missile program, including unilateral sanctions on banks and companies from China and other countries that do business with Pyongyang.

"If it agrees to stop its nuclear program, it can reclaim its future".

Repeated sanctions have failed to deter North Korea's weapons program.

He did not elaborate, but North Korea frequently vows to destroy the United States. Are we looking at a third world war?

"The North Korean regime has not yet passed the point of no-return. The choice is theirs".

China also backed Monday's United Nations resolution, which bans textile exports and restricts shipments of oil products, though it did so only after Washington toned down its original proposal to secure the backing of Beijing and Moscow. The names of a few North Korean officials have also been added to UN's blacklist, which results in the freezing of their assets overseas and a worldwide travel ban.

"The resumption of the complex would be possible after progress over the resolution of North Korea's nuclear issue". The resolution adopted Monday adds only one person to the sanctions list - Pak Yong Sik, a member of the Workers' Party of Korea Central Military Commission, which controls the country's military and helps direct its military industries.

He told Sky News: "These sanctions to toughen up the action we're taking on the regime".

According to North Korea, the U.S. "is trying to use Pyongyang's legitimate self-defensive measures as an excuse to strangle and completely suffocate it".

After several days of intensive negotiations, the embargo on natural gas has been kept, but for the oil, the sales will be limited to 500,000 barrels during the three months from 1 October to 2 million barrels from 1 January for a period of 12 months. Kyodo News reported that "North Korea's inability to pay has resulted in a steep decline in exports of petroleum products from China", citing Chinese customs figures as showing exports of kerosene, gasoline, and other non-crude oil petroleum products totaling 19,700 tons between May and July - down 75% from a year ago. Textiles are North Korea's main source of export revenue after coal, iron, seafood and other minerals that have already been severely restricted by previous United Nations resolutions. "It would be a different kind of sanction that would have broader impact on the economy", Kent Boydston, an analyst at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, told CNN Money.

North Korea's million man army poses a lethal conventional force and has for a long time; the addition of the nuclear equation ups the strategic ante to a dangerously new level not only for neighboring South Korea, but for Japan, and the U.S. Pacific island of Guam.

"The U.S. needs to switch from isolation to communication in order to end an "endless loop" on the Korean peninsula, where "nuclear and missile tests trigger tougher sanctions and tougher sanctions invite further tests", it said".

Washington has said military action remains an option in dealing with North Korea and threatened to cut economic ties with countries that continue to trade with the it.

North Korea appears to have developed the ability to pour destruction on its enemies, including those that were once safely out of reach across the vast Pacific Ocean.

"The forthcoming measures to be taken by the DPRK will cause the USA the greatest pain and suffering it had ever gone through in its entire history".
