Wallaby star unleashes storm over same-sex marriage

Wallaby star unleashes storm over same-sex marriage”

Cape Town - Wallabies fullback Israel Folau has sparked controversy by revealing he will not support the push for same-sex marriage.

In his tweet on Wednesday afternoon he said he loves and respects everyone for their opinions but that he would not support same-sex marriage.

He was immediately inundated with dozens of replies criticising him for his stance.

Some conservative lawmakers threatened to resign if Turnbull did not stick to the public vote, while more liberal members said they would side with the opposition Labor Party to secure same-sex marriage if the PM did not resolve the issue.

Australia on Tuesday launched a postal vote on whether to legalise same-sex marriage as a widely watched poll indicated the country would overwhelmingly support such unions.

Folau is one of Australia's most popular athletes, having played at the highest level in rugby union, rugby league and Australian football.

His views are in stark contrast to Wallabies teammate David Pocock, who has taken the year off rugby but will be back in the Test ranks alongside Folau next year.

Folau's former Wallabies teammate David Pocock, who is now in Japan as part of an Australian rugby sabbatical, tweeted his support for marriage equality on Wednesday afternoon.

As recently as last month, Pocock was using his Twitter account to encourage people to check their enrolment to ensure they are able to vote.

His post comes a day after Wallabies captain Michael Hooper spoke to Fairfax Media of his, and the team's, support of marriage equality, with the Wallabies also making a public stand on their respective social media channels.
