Why There Won't Be a Debt Ceiling Crisis in December

-President Trump's top priority is now tax reform, and he is intent on making sure that this effort does not go the way of health-care reform: a failure to secure enough votes from members of his own party.

Trump told North Dakotans last week that Heitkamp is a "good woman" and called her on stage with elected Republicans during an event he held to rally support for his tax cuts in Bismarck. That might help them, but it doesn't help you and me, and it doesn't solve any of the country's fiscal problems.

With Trump's lead role in negotiating the deal, the most hard-core limited-government Republicans could oppose the bill. On Tuesday evening, the president and vice president are hosting a dinner with both Republican and Democratic senators.

Republican Senator Ben Sasse said the experience of watching Mr Trump empower Democrats had been "embarrassing" for a Republican-controlled Congress and that the deal made Mr Schumer "the most powerful man in America". Trump over the weekend said he wanted to "speed up" the process, but lawmakers insist it's going to take a lot of time and effort to get something passed before the end of the year.

The Democrats hail from states Trump won in November, and the White House is interested in getting their support for a tax bill. Times chief White House correspondent Peter Baker penned a piece on Saturday suggesting as much.

Mnuchin acknowledged the difficulty of passing the massive tax cuts Trump called for without ballooning the deficit.

"I've talked with President Trump before about my proposal to address the outsourcing of American jobs", Donnelly said in a statement. "I think that's ridiculous and disgraceful".

U.S. Sens. Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, should represent Iowans and the majority of our nation.

"What we're trying to do is sort of test the limits of whether or not Democrats are for any kind of a tax reform bill", Thune said, "to find out where some of the more moderate-leaning Democrats in the Senate might be, and if there is in fact a way to get a bipartisan tax deal". They are hoping to make progress on forging the budget plan, which is required to stave off potential Democratic blocking tactics and pass the subsequent tax bill only with GOP votes. Any kind of tax reform or tax cut is now dicey, and even funding the government through the end of the next fiscal year is nearly certainly going to require another one of those ginormous, swamp-feeding omnibus bills. If conservative options are presented to the president, "I'm confident when that happens, he will pick those options that are conservative", Jordan said.

'Despite promises of commitments that they've made to voters since 2010, we don't feel like we can assume that we can get tax reform done strictly on a partisan basis, ' Marc Short, the president's legislative affairs director, told reporters at a Christian Science Monitor Breakfast this morning.

But the loudest rumblings about the future of Ryan's leadership have been traced to the more conservative factions of the House-namely the right-wing Freedom Caucus and the Republican Study Committee. Senator Strange faces a tough runoff in the Republican primary on September 26, and could well be defeated by conservative firebrand Roy Moore, the former chief justice of Alabama.

"I don't have any reason to think Paul Ryan is exceptionally gifted or bad at managing those tensions".
