Wightlink salings suspended after ferry fire

Wightlink salings suspended after ferry fire”

The Yarmouth to Lymington service is expected to be out of service for most of today, while the Marine Accident Investigation Branch looks into what happened.

Wightlink has suspended its services between Lymington and Yarmouth after a fire broke out in the engine room of the Wight Sky during yesterday evening's sailing.

The crew member was later discharged from hospital after being treated for burns. Investigators from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) remain onboard the Wight Sky this morning carrying out enquiries and once they have concluded their investigations, Wightlink will move the vessel from Yarmouth Harbour and bring in a replacement auto ferry, Wight Sun.

"Wightlink apologises to customers for the inconvenience caused to customers".

The alert to the fire beneath the vehicle deck was raised as the ship on the 9pm crossing approached the Isle of Wight. All customers on board disembarked at Yarmouth as usual when the ship berthed. Passengers due to travel on the Yarmouth to Lymington route this morning have been transferred to the Fishbourne to Portsmouth service.

"I want to pay tribute to the crew of Wight Sky who acted in an exemplary manner throughout to deal with the incident and minimise disruption to customers".
