Athletes, Activists and Allies Issue 'Statement of Solidarity' With Michael Bennett”

Colin Kaepernick, WNBA legend Sue Bird, tennis champion Martina Navritalova, NFL safety Eric Reid, Olympian and civil rights icon John Carlos, and US soccer great Megan Rapinoe were among an esteemed group of athletes and activists on Wednesday to publicly offer their support and solidarity to Seattle Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett, who has faced vast backlash in the past week since publicly accusing the Las Vegas Police Department of racially profiling him and treating him with excessive force. After the fight, Bennett says he headed back to his hotel when he heard what he thought were gunshots and saw people running. 'I'm literally just, like, anxious if I make the wrong decision. if I move too fast, if I twitch, and somebody says I'm resisting. because I'm a big guy, you know what I'm saying?'

Bennett first told his encounter on social media and recounted the story with ABC News saying he was in Las Vegas to attend the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor fight last month.

He says it's because he's a black man.

Bennett says he was restrained and held at gunpoint in Las Vegas on August 27 by officers who were looking for a shooting suspect.

Standing firm that he was targeted due to being a black man in the wrong place at the wrong time, the athlete claimed cops were physically and verbally abusive towards him until they learned he was an National Football League player thanks to a Google search.

This story is very bad enough. "Now we stand with him". He believes his race is why he was held, a claim denied by Las Vegas police.

Bennett was already an outspoken critic of police violence against minorities, and was one of many players who protested by sitting or kneeling during the national anthem in Week 1 of the NFL season. Bennett reiterated his allegations about the LVMPD officers' treatment, including that an involved officer threatened to "blow his fucking head off" if he moved and that the officers only released him after confirming his identity as a famous athlete.
