China looking at a timeline to ban the sale of fuel cars”

Joining France, Britain and Norway, China, the world's largest market for electric cars, has announced that it is working on legislation that will set a deadline to phase out petrol powered cars in favor of electric vehicles.

Regulators haven't decided yet when the Chinese ban would take effect, but work has begun on a timetable, according to China's vice minister of industry, Xin Guobin. "Those measures will certainly bring profound changes for our vehicle industry's development".

The world's second-biggest economy, China made 28 million cars a year ago - nearly a third of the global total.

China is preparing to put the brakes on gasoline and diesel cars, reports CNN Money.

Carmakers are following suit.

Mahindra & Mahindra is the only electric auto maker in India but in a few years it may be joined by Tata Motors which has explored the possibility of building electric cars on its existing platform, managing director Guenter Butschek said.Hyundai, which shelved plans to launch hybrid cars in India after the government's electric push, said it will need to customise its existing electric cars for the Indian market. The company wants to sell one million models by 2025.

Ashok Leyland, which launched an electric bus a year ago, has partnered with Indian start-up SUN Mobility to develop battery-swapping technology for cars, buses and trucks.

Closing the gap on its global rivals, China is aiming for plug-in hybrid cars to represent at least 20 per cent of its auto market by 2025.

As well as disrupting the auto industry, China's commitment to electric vehicles could also affect the oil industry as the country is the world's second-largest oil consumer after the US.
