Contempt case: Pakistan's election commission issues warrant against Imran Khan”

Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has issued an arrest warrant for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chief Imran Khan in a contempt of court case, Express News reported.

During the hearing of contempt proceedings, PTI chief's counsel Babar Awan contended that the ECP should halt its proceedings in the case since the party had challenged subject-matter jurisdiction in the Islamabad High Court (IHC), adding that his client reached Pakistan this morning after a brief stay in London and Khan is willing to turn up before the commission.

In its order, the ECP also asked Imran Khan to submit surety bonds worth Rs one lakh by September 25.

Earlier, the bench heard the Contempt of Court Case proceedings during which Imran Khan didn't appear before the ECP despite being ordered by the Commission to appear; rather his Counsel Babar Awan appeared before the Election Commission on his behalf.

Khan had declared the ECP biased in party funding case and accused the ECP's tilt towards the ruling party.

The petition's lawyer said that Imran Khan should have appeared before the ECP after its order.

"Had he (Imran Khan) respected the institutions, he would have been present here", said the counsel, asking the commission to continue with the regular proceeding.

Khan's lawyer Babar Awan had then pleaded before the five-member ECP bench, headed by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sardar Muhammad Raza, that they wanted to challenge the ECP's judgement regarding the maintainability of the contempt petition and hence, should be granted some time to do so.

The counsel for Imran Khan, Babar Awan, argued that the PTI chief was overseas and had returned to the country just an hour ago.

Later, talking to newsmen founding member of PTI Akbar S. Babar said Imran is back in the country and he should have appeared the Commission on Thursday. The election commission had ruled then to announce a decision if reply did not filed by August 23.
