Erdogan: Turkey has finalized S-400 purchase, placed deposit”

But NATO officials have voiced disquiet over the purchase of missiles incompatible with alliance systems.

Erdogan's deal with Russian Federation, for which he said a deposit has already been paid, is worth about $2.5 billion, the BBC News reported.

French Foreign Ministry spokeswoman says that an agreement between Moscow and Ankara on deliveries of Russia's S-400 air defense systems is the sovereign choice of Turkey which should not be commented on.

"We brought to the attention of Turkish officials that we are concerned about the potential acquisition of the S-400".

The deal cements a recent rapprochement with Russian Federation, despite differences over the war in Syria, and comes as Turkey's ties with the United States and the European Union have become strained. "So what? Are we going to wait for you?"

Talking about the arms deal Tuesday, Erdogan reportedly said that North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies had provided "tanks, cannons and armored vehicles to the terror organization but we can't procure some of our needs, although we want to pay the price".

Turkey faced similar worries during the Iran-Iraq War and the First and Second Gulf Wars due to the ballistic missiles possessed by those countries. It is believed that a measure of transfer-of-technology will be involved, though to what extent is not known, though Bloomberg reported that two of the S-400 systems would be "produced" in Turkey.

The S-400 is Russia's next-generation, most advanced long-range anti-aircraft missile system. And we'll be manufacturing other, better things.

Turkey has been developing stronger ties with Russian Federation and souring on its relationship with the United States, which has supported the YPG Syrian Kurdish rebels during the Syrian civil war, the BBC News reported.

Later, Chancellor Angela Merkel said that Germany would only restrict some arms sales to Turkey, softening the earlier announcement of a freeze on major arms sales, Reuters reported.

The U.S. Defense Department said that it relayed its concerns to Turkey, and that the U.S.is committed to expediting the delivery of military equipment purchased by Turkey when possible.
