"The survey results show South Koreans have likely grown accustomed to its repeated threats of provocation after over 60 years in a ceasefire state", Gallup Korea said in a statement.

"On the other side of the coin, everyone now seems to expect North Korea to take a provocative step of some kind on September 9, and it doesn't serve Pyongyang's interests to be too predictable in the short run".

If this proves true, Lee's reference to the "normal angle" could dictate what happens next. North Korea's test on Sunday of a hydrogen bomb significantly raised those tensions.

China hopes North Korea will "see the situation clearly and come to the right judgment and choice", Wang said.

US President Donald Trump has urged China, North Korea's biggest ally and trading partner, to do more to rein in its neighbour which has pursued its missile and nuclear weapons programmes in defiance of United Nations sanctions and worldwide condemnation. "If we do use it on North Korea, it will be a very sad day for North Korea".

Most experts agree the regime isn't likely to attempt an unprovoked attack.

North Korea says it needs its weapons to protect itself from USA aggression and regularly threatens to destroy the United States.

The U.N. Security Council is expected to vote on a new set of sanctions soon.

South Korea President Moon Jae-in held discussions on North Korea with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, hosted by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Mr Turnbull repeated his belief the risk of war was the greatest since the end of the Korean War and said the government was developing emergency plans for Australians in the area. The conflict was halted by a 1953 armistice but no peace treaty has been signed.

Citing "successful missile launch in North Korea", sub-base commander Yoshichika Kawahiro told RT's Ruptly video agency that the objective of the drills was to improve the operation of interceptor missiles and tactics of the Air Self-Defense Force, as well as cooperation with the US Armed Forces.

The decision to deploy the THAAD system has drawn strong objections from China, which believes its radar could be used to look deeply into its territory and will upset the regional security balance.

Many South Koreans who live in the small farming community where it is being deployed are also angry.

They also complain that their peaceful lives have been interrupted by dozens of military helicopters, buses, and trucks constantly traveling through the mainly agricultural area.

Hundreds of residents and other protesters fought with police as they attempted to block the entrance to the former golf course that now houses THAAD. Thirty-eight people, including six officers, were injured during scuffles between police and demonstrators, a fire department official in Seongju told AP. Alexander Smith reported from London.
