Google hit with lawsuit alleging it systematically pays women less than men”

Three former Google employees on Thursday filed a class action complaint against the tech giant, alleging it discriminated against women in pay and promotions, building on a debate of whether gender bias is pervasive at Google.

Google, under federal investigation over alleged "extreme" pay discrimination against women, has just been hit with a lawsuit claiming it systematically pays women less than men.

The plaintiffs say Google violated California laws requiring equal pay for similar work and prohibiting unfair and unlawful business practices. The probe stems from an audit in 2015 that found women earned less than men in almost every job position.

After the New York Times detailed the employee spreadsheets on Friday, Google spokesperson Gina Scigliano told Gizmodo that its own data shows, when you take "location, tenure, job role, level and performance" into account, that "women are paid 99.7% of what men are paid at Google". They quit after they were put on a career path they said would pay them less than their male counterparts.

"While Google has been an industry-leading tech innovator, its treatment of female employees has not entered the 21st century", Kelly Dermody, a lawyer for the women, said in a statement. The suit aims to represent more Google employees in California-as many as 90 more women who used to work there have contacted the lead attorney on the case. "In relation to this particular lawsuit, we'll review it in detail, but we disagree with the central allegations". She said employment decisions are made by hiring and promotion committees, and are vetted "to make sure there is no gender bias".
