Suit: Loose Lid on 'Extra Hot' Tea Killed Starbucks Customer's Dog

Suit: Loose Lid on 'Extra Hot' Tea Killed Starbucks Customer's Dog”

A woman is suing Starbucks claiming its employees caused her dog's death and gave her horrific injuries by handing her hot tea in a cup with a loose lid.

In documents obtained by KDVR, Deanna Salas-Solano alleges that during a September 2015 visit to a Denver Starbucks she was handed a cup of hot tea without a hot tea sleeve and an unsecured lid. The lawsuit claims the tea was unreasonably hot and the Starbucks worker failed to place the cup in a sleeve or make sure the lid was on properly. He was taken to the vet and died shortly after.

Salas-Solano's lawyer said the tea was so hot that it "melted" her clothes and caused "severe burns" on her abdomen and thighs.

Salas-Solano is seeking more than $75,000 for injuries including severe burns, physical impairment, disfigurement, emotional distress and lost wages.

In the video, it's hard to tell if Salas-Solano grabs the cup by the hot sleeve or by the lid when she accidentally spilled it.

A Denver, Colorado woman has filed a lawsuit against Starbucks alleging one of their hot beverages scalded her and her dog - the latter fatally so.

Solas-Solando is seeking in excess of $75,000 Dollars in damages according to her suit, alleging among other things that the Starbucks barista did not follow company policy in using a double-cup for extra-hot beverages. The tea caused Plaintiff's clothing to melt. "Plaintiff immediately experienced intense pain including on her stomach, legs, and lap".

As Salas-Solano allegedly cried out in pain, she says her dog Alexander jumped on to her lap, causing her to spill tea on him too.

Another photograph shows Alexander's injuries.

A burn injury reportedly suffered by Deanna Salas-Solano, included in the complaint against Starbucks.

According to the lawsuit, Alexander was taken to an emergency veterinarian hospital but "ultimately succumbed to the injuries caused by the tea, dying a short time later".

The video also shows the hot tea did have a hot sleeve and it appears the lid was secure, though the video is not conclusive.

A Starbucks spokesman said the company denies the allegations and has video evidence to prove that the coffee chain's employee was not at fault. In May, a jury awarded $100,000 to a Florida woman who claimed she was severely burned and permanently scarred after a lid fell off a Venti-size Starbucks cup and spilled 190-degree coffee into her lap.

'We look forward to presenting our case in court.
