Turkey brushes off North Atlantic Treaty Organisation concern over Russian missile defense system purchase

Turkey brushes off North Atlantic Treaty Organisation concern over Russian missile defense system purchase”

As Turkey's accord for the S-400 defense mechanism is a deal with a non-NATO supplier, the possible purchase raised concerns in the West over compatibility with the alliance's equipment.

In a statement to Turkish journalists, Erdoğan revealed that Turkey had already paid a deposit to Russian Federation, though it is still engaging on an intergovernmental basis on the issue of export credit to support the deal.

Russia and Turkey have signed a contract for Ankara to purchase the Russian-made S-400 missile defence system, the Kremlin confirmed on Tuesday.

The total worth of the S-400 missile system supply deal between Russian Federation and Turkey is more than 2 billion dollars, Komersant newspaper reported citing an anonymous source in the military. Should we wait for you?

The total value of the deal is believed to be around $2.5 billion. Turkey commands the second largest standing military inside of 29-member-state-NATO.

Ankara objected to the criticism by the United States, citing that Greece, another North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member, purchased the Russian S-300 defense system and has been using it for years.

The S-400 system is an advanced Russian missile system created to detect, track, and destroy planes, drones, or missiles as far as 402 kilometers away.

His explanations, however, did not stop the outpouring of criticism from the United States and other members of the military alliance.

Erdogan remained defiant, making it clear on Tuesday that "nobody has the right to discuss the Turkish republic's independence principles or independent decisions about its defense industry". He was referencing the US decision to arm the Kurdish YPG for the fight against ISIS in Syria, despite fierce protest by Turkey.

"We will take matters into our own hands". Two years later, NATO Patriot missile batteries were withdrawn from Turkey.

The spat has prompted Germany to restrict its arms sales to Turkey.
