United Kingdom govt proposes exemptions to new data protection rules”

A revised Data Protection Bill will introduce safeguards to prevent and detect fraud, protect the freedom of the press and maintain the integrity of professional sports.

Specifically, journalists will be allowed to process data to expose wrongdoing, anti-doping agencies will be able to process data to catch sporting drug cheats and financial institutions will still be allowed to price risk or process data if there's a suspicion of terrorist financing or money laundering.

The results of a survey commissioned by specialist IT solutions distributor, DataSolutions, has found that nearly one quarter (23%) of Irish organisations would be forced to close if they were found to be liable to fines under impending General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) legislation.

Last month the government said the new Bill would give the United Kingdom one of the "most robust" set of data laws, as well as prepare the country for its post-Brexit future by giving Brits much greater control over how their information is collected and used.

The UK government today published a Data Protection Bill created to enshrine the EU GDPR into domestic legislation to minimize disruption to businesses post-Brexit.

The Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) has launched a new service, BMF Cyber Audit Plus, to help members reinforce their information security and to comply with new data protection laws, which come into force in May 2018.

It said it has "successfully negotiated these exemptions from the EU's General Data Protection Regulation to create a proportionate data protection regime which is right for Britain".

GDPR will significantly impact businesses' approach to data privacy compliance and will likely require major changes in the way organisations collect, use, handle and store personal data, according to law firm and insurance specialists DAC Beachcroft.

He also added that the bill will have a few exemptions to the rules, to make sure data that's vital to the UK's economy, democracy and society can be processed in a proper manner. "Today, as we publish the Data Protection Bill, I am offering assurances to both the public and private sector that we are protecting this important work".

The intent behind the proposal is 'to ensure that United Kingdom businesses and organisations can continue to support world leading research, financial services, journalism and legal services, ' the government said in its latest update.

And where justified, the Bill will allow the processing of sensitive and criminal conviction data without consent.

Employees who access data with a justifiable reason but without consent, to fulfil obligations of employment law.
