Air quality alert issued for Twin Cities, other parts of Minnesota

Air quality alert issued for Twin Cities, other parts of Minnesota”

A new air quality alert has been issued for the southern half of Minnesota.

The air quality index is expected to be unhealthy for sensitive groups due to a combination of unseasonably warm temperatures, mostly sunny skies, smoke from Western wildfires, and high ozone levels. The worst conditions are expected during the afternoon and early evening in the Twin Cities area, St. Cloud, Hinckley and the tribal nation of Mille Lacs.

Those at risk include people with asthma, breathing conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic bronchitis and emphysema and children and teenagers.

091417 Air

If people experience severe symptoms, such as difficulty taking deep breaths, throat soreness, coughing or unusual fatigue, they are asked to contact their doctor.

During air quality alerts, everyone is encouraged to minimize use of vehicles, avoid burning wood, and postpone the use of small gas-powered equipment like lawn mowers.
