Apple threatens to abandon Athenry data centre

Apple threatens to abandon Athenry data centre”

USA tech giant Apple's plan to build a new Euro 850 million ($1 billion or roughly Rs. ) data centre in Ireland is being held up by conservationists seeking to preserve the forest where it is to be built.

"I can confirm today that (Prime Minister) Leo Varadkar met with Apple executives last week and that Apple remains committed to its Euro 850 million data centre investment in Athenry", he wrote on Facebook.

Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Galway East TD Ciaran Cannon said the Taoiseach met with Apple executives last week.

Apple's patience might be wearing thin, with the company reportedly warning Irish authorities that further delays could put the project at risk, leading it to scale back its ambitions or abandon the massive data center entirely.

Seán Canney, the Independent Alliance TD and former junior minister, has claimed that the tech giant told the taoiseach last week that it was still committed to Ireland.

Apple announced plans to build the centre near Athenry in 2015 and expected to have had it built by this year.

However the centre in Denmark is now almost finished and Apple plans to build another there.

According to Bloomberg, Apple executives have told the government that they are prepared to pull out if delays continue.

"There's no question about that - we're all concerned", he added.

Though the High Court agreed to fast-track a second legal challenge to the centre's planning approval in November, that case will not be heard until October.

Apple is also reportedly anxious that its plans to power the facility using the grid, offset by renewable Power Purchase Agreements, could be contested as well, causing yet more delays.
