At least 19 dead, dozens missing after boat capsizes in India”

Baghpat: On Thursday morning, a boat coming from UP's Baghpat district to Haryana capsized in the Yamuna river killing at least 20 people.

Eleven people were rescued and were admitted to a government hospital, he said.

It was ferrying people more than its capacity.

Chief Minister Adityanath has announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for the victims' families, ANI reported.

The death toll is expected to rise.

"We have pressed in our men at several spot along the stretch of river to search for missing", the official said.

The Press Trust of India news agency said the boat capsized mid-stream and most of the victims were women.

As the boat capsized, 50-year-old Shimla Devi, somehow, caught hold of her husband Rajbir's kurta and managed to swim across safely to the river bank as Rajbir knew swimming.

District Magistrate Bhawani Singh and senior officers wer forced to rush back to save themselves from public ire which hampered rescue operation.

They also jammed the Delhi-Saharanpur highway after placing the dead bodies on road.

He said a probe has been ordered into the incident.
