Funeral services set for former US senator”

When he was elected to the Senate, he was the first New Mexico Republican to become a senator in 38 years. He ran unsuccessfully for governor in 1970 and then won the 1972 Senate election. He became the state's longest-serving US senator.

"Senator Domenici is a legend in New Mexico politics, and though he will be sorely missed, his impact will be felt in the state - and the nation - for generations to come", Udall said". "When I was a younger person, it was hard meeting the first time with somebody as powerful as Senator Domenici, but.he made you feel very comfortable, whether it was in a suit and tie or a set of Levi's at a ballgame". "And I'm glad I didn't". While we sat on different sides of the political aisle, I admired Pete's dedication to the well-being of all of New Mexico.

NM Political Report collected the statements throughout the day, many of which referenced his work on mental health and his support of New Mexico's national labs.

The son of Italian immigrants, Domenici was not one to slam the door shut so others could not receive the same opportunities afforded to his family. He received his law degree from Denver University and opened a law office in 1958 - the same year he married Nancy Burk.

On the Senator's frequent visits to Luna County, Baca said Domenici was an avid quail hunter with cordial ties to the ranching and farming communities, and was often seen worshipping at St. Ann's Catholic Church. He also was respected by many state and local government leaders throughout the state - including many Democrats - for his help in getting funds for local projects. We will always honor the progress and success of Senator Domenici's legacy, not only for the Republican Party of New Mexico, but also for our wonderful state. Pete Domenici died at the age of 85. "In today's somewhat hyperpartisan world, we can really learn a lesson". He worked for more than a decade on this pioneering legislation - it is fitting that it was one of his final votes before retiring.

Following a moment of silence Wednesday at the State Capitol in Santa Fe, Republicans and Democrats - from Gov. Susana Martinez to legislative leaders - all said that Domenici was someone who put politics aside for the benefit of the people.

"Like others in this chamber, I served with Sen".

Toward that end, Domenici worked across the aisle - most particularly with his longtime colleague Democratic Sen.

State Land Commissioner Aubrey Dunn called Domenici "a patriot and a devoted statesmen" and offered his condolences to the family.

State Republican Party Chairman Ryan Cangiolosi said in a statement, "Sen". "Senator Domenici's love and dedication to our state and country was unparalleled".

Wednesday morning, news broke that former U.S. Sen.

New Mexico's longest-serving US senator, Domenici was remembered most for his ability to reach across the aisle and for his unflagging support of the state's military installations and national laboratories. His contributions to the labs, our energy resources, the state budget, and protecting our environment are incalculable. "Even on those occasions when we disagreed, I never doubted his commitment to do what he believed was best for New Mexico". Her experience led him to ensure that other people - perhaps without the resources of a USA senator - could find the medical help they needed. Domenici dedicated his entire life to the state and people he loved. I am grateful for the example Sen. He even refused once to buckle to President Ronald Reagan.

Domenici announced in October 2007 that he wouldn't seek a seventh term because he had been diagnosed with an incurable brain disorder, frontotemporal lobar degeneration. He said he was confident of his ability to serve the remaining 14 months of his term but did not want to risk impairment over an additional six years in office.

Domenici was surrounded by family when he died at an Albuquerque hospital after suffering a setback following a recent surgery, his family said.

Smith attributed Domenici's long run in the Senate to maintaining contact with local communities as well ashis bipartisan approach to policy. Domenici kept that secret for about 35. Their son, Adam Laxalt, was elected attorney general of Nevada in 2014. When Domenici made the disclosure, critics pointed out that in the late 1990s, at the height of President Bill Clinton's sex scandal, Domenici helped start a program for school students called "Character Counts".
