Governor Cuomo in town to address black discharge at Niagara Falls”

NY state is fining the Niagara Falls Water Board $50,000 for discharging black and smelly water near the falls during a busy tourist weekend.

The fine was levied by the DEC under the direction of NY state governor Andrew Cuomo, who ordered the department investigate the July 29 incident, which drew widespread attention after photos shared online went viral. "This is about operator error", Cuomo said.

"In short, we demand that the Board make fixing this plant, and end further illegal discharges as a priority", Lynch added.

The July 29 discharge caused discolored water to empty into the Niagara River near the American side of the falls on a summer weekend critical to the local tourism industry.

Cuomo does not think that the DEC found evidence of an incident like this happening previously.

Speaking to reporters along the rim of the gorge, near the Rainbow Bridge, on Thursday, Cuomo said, that the black water discharge not only damaged the environment - it hurt Niagara Falls image around the world.

"DEC continues to closely oversee practices at the Niagara Falls Wastewater Treatment Plant to ensure no violations of water quality standards continue", DEC commissioner Basil Seggos said. "We have a plant, and they just improperly operated the plant". "It was a awful situation and a bad breakdown and we won't allow it to happen again", he concluded.
