Halimah Yacob sworn in as Singapore's first female President

Halimah Yacob sworn in as Singapore's first female President”

Satire site New Nation pushed out a satirical post about how the hermit kingdom's ruler, Kim Jong-un, congratulated President Halimah Yacob for "achieving a solid decisive win without the need for an election". "Representation of Singapore", Singapore's Home Affairs and Law Minister K. Shanmugam posted on Facebook yesterday.

While there have been some rumblings over the process through which Madam Halimah Yacob became the president, Singaporeans should unite and rally behind her now that she is, Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong said yesterday.

As the only qualified candidate in the election which was reserved for the country's Malay community, she was declared by the presidential electoral board as the new President shortly after she handed in her nomination forms.

Singapore's prime minister is Lee Hsien Loong and the chief justice is Sundaresh Menon.

"We expect our head of state to be a unifying figure, but we must also do our part to help the President succeed".

But there was already unease about the process as it was the first time that the presidency had been reserved for a particular ethnic group, in this case, the Malay community, and the decision to hand her the job without a vote added to the anger.

"Expressing expectation that the friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries would grow stronger on the principle of respect for sovereignty and mutual benefits, the message sincerely wished the Singaporean president success in her work for the prosperity of the country".

"I have no doubt that she will gain the respect and support of the people as a humble, down-to-earth and honest President with a big heart for all, regardless of status, wealth, abilities, race or religion".
