Major fire at LPG bottling plant in city”

A major fire broke out at the go-down of the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited's Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) bottling plant at Cherlapally in north-eastern part of the city on Thursday night. However no human loss was reported so far.

Workers ran to safety and people in surrounding colonies were immediately evacuated as exploding cylinder shells started falling on residential areas. People were seen running away from the vicinity of the godown.

Assistant District Forest Officer Shankar Lingam said six teams from the Cherlapally, Moula Ali, Malkajgiri, Jeedimetla, Sanathnagar and Musheerabad fire stations were deployed for the exercise. Five ambulances were also dispatched.

The municipal authorities also informed the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) about the incident so that flights coming into the area could be diverted.

The sources said that the incident took place at the corosal, which has the capacity to fill 66 cylinders per minute but the machine is seven years old. "The situation was brought under control by 9.50 PM", he said, adding that no casualties were reported. He said the alert official machinery had ensured that nobody was injured.
