Newstalk has suspended George Hook

Newstalk has suspended George Hook”

George Hook took to Twitter following the backlash to apologise.

'Newstalk can confirm that George Hook has been suspended from his duties at the station'.

'The process re: his comments last week is ongoing'.

The remarks, which related to a rape case in the United Kingdom, caused widespread condemnation.

He said: "I made comments about rape on the programme that were totally inappropriate and unacceptable and I should never have made them".

Speaking on RTE's Morning Ireland Mr Varadkar said: "Nobody who is raped or sexually assaulted is responsible in any way".

Newstalk has suspended presenter George Hook following his controversial comments about rape.

He added that the presenter's comments were "indicative of attitudes that still exist in Irish society that need to change".

It is thought this letter, which was seen by RTÉ News, was not formally handed to management.

Furthermore, both Tesco and Dalata Hotels Group have pulled advertising from Newstalk, with calls for other advertisers to abandon the station and Hook's show.

During a show a week ago, the presenter appeared to suggest that rape victims should bear some responsibility for their ordeal "if they put themselves in unsafe situations".
