Park grabs first-round lead at Evian Championship

Park grabs first-round lead at Evian Championship”

Ko, the 2015 victor at Evian, had birdies on the 12th and 14th holes, before getting to three-under at the par-four first, finishing with eight straight pars.

"I mean, we all expected it as soon as we saw it", said Jessica Korda, who was also at 2 under when play was canceled.

Park was the beneficiary of some good fortune in having her initial score disallowed, and she took full advantage of the second chance afforded to her Friday.

The Korean hit 16 of 18 greens and made it around in 26 putts, a far cry from the start she had on Thursday when she was six-over par on her first nine when play was suspended due to severe weather.

"It sucked because I was playing so well yesterday, and some people weren't playing so well yesterday that are playing well today, and there's nothing I can do about that", she told Golf Digest.

"The distance was 25 meters, so I was deciding whether I'm going to do chipping or putting, and I think after I made the shot, I was surprised, as well", Park said about her eagle. Play was abandoned and all scores wiped from the record, leaving the fifth and final women's major as a 54-hole event.

Lydia Ko: "Nobody wants to make it a 54-hole event, but that's why it was such a tough decision. Yesterday the last couple holes we felt like we were playing in a hurricane", said Korda. When asked why the call was made so early, Daly-Donofrio said officials looked at the weekend forecast and anxious they might need Monday just to get in 54 holes. I was annoyed until about 9 PM last night, and then I was like, 'All right, screw it. What's done is done, and we'll just keep moving forward.' So that's what happened. "So that's what happened". "But the more I've thought about it, I really think it was just the luck of the draw and scores should've been kept".

"Obviously, look at this weather, I see what they were talking about in terms of it's not going to be fair", said Korda. Meanwhile, top-ranked Seo Yeon Ryu, who played alongside Park, went from a share of first at 2 under, to 4-over 75. That's just the way it goes. You're going to have people like that. "Welcome to golf. I wish it wasn't scrapped, but welcome to golf".
