Premier Wynne testifies at bribery trial

Premier Wynne testifies at bribery trial”

Brown is the second PC member to make that insinuation in the past couple of days; a PC backbencher apologized after Wynne's lawyers threatened legal action against him. "And so I think it has to be clear what is actually happening, and that's what my letter sought to clarify". Regrettably Kathleen Wynne compounded this sorry spectacle with baseless legal threats against me; threats that will be ignored.

In the original letter sent to Brown, Wynne's legal team suggested that a decision to ignore the demands would not be taken lightly.

In her testimony Wednesday, Wynne has agreed that the idea was to let Olivier, who lost in the 2014 election, down easy and keep him in the Liberal fold.

"We'll see what happens", she said.

On Wednesday, he served Brown with a letter stating that he "made a statement about the premier of Ontario that is false and defamatory".

She says her lawyers are discussing the next steps.

Wynne's lawyer, Jack Siegel told CP24 that if Brown merely misspoke, he should own up to that, but not call his client's concerns "baseless".

"Fair political criticism is one thing, but as a public figure himself, one might have thought that he would recognize that untruths that defame another politician are unacceptable", Siegel said in a statement.

"Mr. Brown's refusal to take that simple step therefore suggests that this was not an accident and that his remarks were deliberately made with the intention of harming the reputation of the premier", Siegel wrote in response to Brown's Thursday statement.

At issue are comments Brown made about the premiers role in a Liberal bribery trial.

On Tuesday, Brown told reporters at Queen's Park that Wynne may only provide answers about the scandal "when she stands trial".

The Liberals chose to pursue legal counsel when, earlier this week, Brown spoke to reporters about the ongoing bribery trial where local Liberal organizer Gerry Lougheed Jr. and Wynne's former deputy chief of staff Patricia Sorbara face Election Act charges.

Last week, Bill Walker told a local radio station Wynne was under investigation and facing charges in connection with the bribery trial.

Wynne would later testify that having Thibeault join the provincial Liberals was "intriguing", to her. That matter was settled in 2015. Two party officials are trial facing just such an allegation.
