Real Madrid deliver Mateo Kovacic injury update”

The versatile midfielder made the starting line-up in the Champions League opener against Apoel, but was forced off and replaced by Kroos in the 25 minute of the game after picking up the knock.

Kovacic, 23, has become a key player for Zidane while serving as a back-up for Casemiro, Luka Modric and Toni Kroos in the middle of the park. The same niggling injury he had a few days ago came back tonight.

The Croatia global lasted just 20 minutes of the European fixture before being replaced by Toni Kroos, having partially torn an adductor muscle in his right leg, and left the pitch in tears.

Spanish media reported on Thursday that Kovacic would be out of action for between one and two months.

The 23-year-old was immediately taken to the Moraleja University Hospital and an official diagnosis has been revealed via Los Blancos' website this afternoon and Kovavic is nearly certain to miss this weekend's La Liga clash against Real Sociedad.

Zidane is already without the suspended Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcelo for the match, as Real look to bounce back after drawing two of the first three games of their La Liga title defence.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcelo remain suspended, and Karim Benzema is now sidelined with an injury.
