Sampha beats Ed Sheeran and Stormzy for Mercury Prize”

Traditionally, the Mercury Prize boosts sales and recognition of the winning artist.

The Hyundai Mercury Prize Awards Show were held at Eventim Apollo, London this evening (September 14).

Skepta, 2016's victor also performed at the event whuch also featured shortlisted artists Alt-J, Blossoms, Dinosaur, Glass Animals, J Hus, Kate Tempest, Loyle Carner, Sampha, Stormzy, The Big Moon and The xx.

Last year's Mercury Prize victor Skepta began the day of the awards at 10/1 and came down to 3/1.

The singer/songwriter said he "felt like I'm dreaming" as he was announced as this year's recipient. "They came over from Sierra Leone and just wanted to give us the best life possible".

The moment when Idris Elba announced Sampha as the victor, to enormous applause, can be seen below.

The band, who have been nominated for their album "How To Be A Human Being", were 14/1 outsiders last night.

The judging panel of 12 included Jamie Cullum and Mumford & Son's Marcus Mumford.
