Sec. of Education Betsy Devos visits Lincoln”

U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos will visit three schools in IN on Friday as part of her "Rethink School" tour.

In March, she praised the Indianapolis Public Schools district, saying more school corporations across the country should follow the "out-of-the-box" school management approach used by IPS.

It's the conclusion of her "Rethink School" tour. The school's spokesman, Chris Gray, said the students DeVos met with were all either campus leaders or students in the tech, health care and culinary programs at which she looked.

"That being said, personally, I do disagree with a lot of her policies", Koelzer said.

U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos sits in a class at the Lincoln Children's Zoo on September 14, 2017, in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Students shared their research projects, and said they liked the smaller environment - about 100 students attend the 20-year-old program - because teachers know them and understand how they learn.

Why organize? Braatz said he holds educators in high esteem and worries about the effects of budget cuts on the public school system - what he calls the greatest infrastructure investment Americans can make.

"We don't need to have choice imposed upon us", Joel said. She will be at Eastern Hancock High School from 6:10 to 8:30 p.m.

"They can't miss school to protest, so asking us to find out information from [DeVos] was a big deal", she said.

"To think that maybe their rights would be infringed on if they had been assaulted and they went to the school about it, is just really frightening and unsettling to me", Koelzer said.

21st Century Charter School recently gained national attention when a student graduated from the school with a high school diploma and a bachelor's degree from a regional Purdue University campus.

"Our students are learning, and they don't need a charter school to be better students", Tran said.

She kicked off her 2017 Rethink School Tour earlier this week in Wyoming, according to a U.S. Department of Education news release.

"We are going to continue to encourage and really push states, not in a top-down, heavy-handed way but in an encouraging way, highlighting the things we've seen and experienced and learned on this trip", DeVos said.

Zoo school senior Annika Novotny said it was nice to be able to show off their school.

"My favorite part about teaching in a public school is the ability to serve all students".

"For me, it is really inspiring to hear their individual stories and to have - once again - confirmed that every single student is special and unique", DeVos said. "We are folks who appreciate the benefit that public education has given us".
