Type 2 diabetes plan targets those at high risk

Type 2 diabetes plan targets those at high risk”

There are now 2.8m people with type 2 diabetes in England and about 200,000 new diagnoses every year.

Nice said the NHS checks should be carried out in workplaces, shops, and libraries, as well as in thousands of GP surgeries, pharmacies and opticians.

"And that this approach is a cost-effective way of managing an illness that now costs the NHS around £8.8 billion a year".

"We need to make sure that the people most at risk have access to the care they need", he said. "This is why this updated guidance from NICE is so important, it will help NHS England and Public Health England to prioritise when necessary".

The symptoms are not always obvious, and many people could be suffering with the condition for years before they learn they have it.

It is also hoped the guideline will help healthcare professionals provide those at high risk with an "effective and appropriate intensive lifestyle-change programme" in a bid to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.

It highlighted lifestyle change programmes, such as the Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme developed by NHS England and Public Health England, which aim to reduce the prevalence of diabetes by helping people to change their diet and increase their physical activity.

One in 10 adults in the United Kingdom is expected to have diabetes by 2035.

The updates state that when commissioning local or national services to deliver intensive lifestyle-change programmes is being considered, if availability of places is limited, people with a fasting plasma glucose of 6.5-6.9 mmol/l or HbA1c of 44-47 mmol/mol [6.2-6.4 per cent] should be prioritised.

The new guidance also sets out ways people can take more exercise and offers advice on healthy eating, such as swapping Bombay mix and crisps for healthier snacks such as unsalted nuts and low-fat yoghurt.

NICE said the lifestyle programmes should be created to help as many people as possible and should be accessible to those with mental illness or dementia who may have poorer physical health.

"We welcome these updated guidelines from NICE, which recognise the importance of preventing the condition, and the serious harm it causes to those living with it".

The NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme is now being implemented throughout England in response to the 2012 recommendations in this guideline.

'Implementing the 2017 recommendations will allow this programme to be initially targeted at groups of the population who will benefit most, in a way that is consistent across the United Kingdom'.
