U.S. bans govt use of Russian Kaspersky”

The US government's Department of Homeland Security has issued an order to governmental agencies that they should stop using Kaspersky software over fears of Russian-led cyberespionage. The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Wednesday directed federal departments and agencies to remove Kaspersky Lab products from their information systems.

"If there is even a breadcrumb of evidence that Kaspersky may be meddling with the Russian government, then obviously that is a problem for the feds", said Robert Siciliano, a cybersecurity expert with Hotspot Shield. It said Wednesday that its products have been sold at Best Buy for a decade.

What did the USA government actually do? Nicholas Weaver, a computer security researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, called the USA government decision "prudent"; he had argued for such a step in July.

Duke gave a statement on the removal of Kaspersky software saying, "The risk that the Russian government, whether acting on its own or in collaboration with Kaspersky, could capitalize on access provided by Kaspersky products to compromise federal information and information systems directly implicates USA national security".

Kaspersky products accounted for about 5.5 percent of anti-malware software products worldwide, according to research firm Statista. Michael Sulmeyer, director of a cybersecurity program at Harvard, noted that antivirus software has deep access to one's computer and network. Homeland Security says it fears Russian Federation could gain access to info that would put US national security at risk.

"We co-operate with many law enforcement agencies around the world - in the past with the USA as well".

Pointing out that he has made multiple offers to do "whatever it takes" to clear his company's name, including testifying before Congress and providing the company's source code for official audit, Kaspersky argued that his company is being targeted because of "geopolitical turbulence".

The Russian statement came in response to the 90-day deadline given to U.S. federal agencies to remove the software.

It said the move was part of a series of steps that would detract from mutual priorities, such as fighting terrorism, and that the United States should reconsider Russia's proposal to set up a joint cyber security group - an idea Trump has entertained but that Republicans and Democrats widely panned.
