USA citizen-turned-ISIS fighter captured in Syria

USA citizen-turned-ISIS fighter captured in Syria”

The U.S. military has detained an American who was captured in Syria while fighting for ISIS, a Pentagon spokesman confirmed Thursday.

CNN's Ryan Browne reported the American was in the custody of the Syrian Democratic Forces, the US-backed militia spearheading the push into the ISIS capital of Raqqa. Adrian Rankine-Galloway said in a statement.

Defense Department personnel have detained the American as "a known enemy combatant" and say they will transport the captive "humanely", according to Rankine-Galloway. Earl Brown told The Daily Beast.

The officials did not give the exact location of the surrender nor the current location of the American.

Earlier on Thursday a spokesperson for the US-led coalition fighting ISIS would not confirm that a US citizen was in the custody of the SDF, referring questions to the US State Department. The Coalition's mission is to defeat ISIS in Syria and Iraq, and we will pursue ISIS fighters regardless of nationality.

"In general, I don't think we're better off bringing these people to federal court", where they are represented by "court-appointed lawyers" and given "discovery rights to find out our intelligence", Sessions said. "As the USA government, we say, 'Don't go do that.' I mean, you can't be very bright, if you're going to go over there and do that".

Thousands of foreign fighters from around the globe flocked to Iraq and Syria after Islamic State first captured vast parts of the two countries in 2014 and proclaimed an Islamist caliphate.

Mohamad Jamal Khweis, 27, was captured by Kurdish forces in northern Iraq in March 2016.

But the fighter captured this week is the first American captured since President Trump took office, presenting a test of how Trump will handle USA citizens suspected of terrorism overseas.

Although Trump said during his presidential campaign that he would be "fine" with sending USA citizens captured on the terrorism battlefield to the US detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to be tried by military commissions, such proceedings are, by statute, authorized only for foreigners. It is now illegal to try USA citizens at military commissions.
