Brazilian player apologizes for offensive gesture in Japan

Brazilian player apologizes for offensive gesture in Japan”

The 24-year-old successfully challenged a line call during his 6-2 7-5 7-6 (7-5) defeat to Yuichi Sugita in Osaka but was caught on camera making an inappropriate gesture towards a line judge.

The gesture was caught on local television and the ITF has subsequently chose to hand down the fine for "unsportsmanlike conduct" after the footage was reviewed by the tie referee. Clezar, who also issued an apology from his Instagram account, is ranked 244th in the world and mainly competes on the Challenger tour. We were extremely well received here and I have an excellent relationship with all the tennis players of the most diverse nations of the circuit.

In a statement published on the Brazillian Tennis Confederation Facebook page, he said he "never had the slightest intention to be aggressive, racist, prejudiced".

'Clezar issued a written apology. Even if I do not understand it, I recognize that the gesture done does not match with attitudes of care, zeal, solidarity, emotion and other things that sport transmits to us. "The ITF condemns all forms of offensive behavior".

He went on to lose the match in straight sets of 6-2, 7-5, 7-6.

Bruno Soares and Marcelo Melo will aim to reduce the arrears for Brazil when they face Ben Mclachlan and Yasutaka Uchiyama in the doubles rubber.

Should Brazil pull one back Sugita will have the chance to seal the tie for Japan against Monteiro.

Earlier this summer, Premier League football club Chelsea apologised to "our Chinese fans as well as Chinese people" after Brazilian player Kenedy posted offensive social media comments before a pre-season match in the country.
