California lawmakers take anti-Trump stance as session ends

California lawmakers take anti-Trump stance as session ends”

Senate Republican Leader Patricia Bates (R- Laguna Niguel) issued the following statement after the state Assembly and Senate approved an amended version of Senate Bill 54 that was agreed to by Governor Brown and Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de León.

California lawmakers will vote on whether to become a so-called sanctuary state and tussle over hot-button environmental issues including a long-shot plan to wean the power sector entirely off of fossil fuels as the legislative session winds down on Friday.

On Friday, lawmakers are set to vote on a bill that would bar local governments from forcing undocumented immigrants to spend extra time in jail just to allow enforcement officers to take them into their custody.

A number of closely watched proposals passed in the Legislature's final hours of work are now headed to Brown's desk, though it's unclear if he will sign them into law.

In an emotional debate that brought lawmakers on both sides to tears, supporters said the law is needed now more than ever. "We believe in the American dream, and this bill today helps some of us believe California is a safe place for immigrants".

California's bill would make candidates share five years of returns to get on the ballot. It also allows enforcement agents access to local jails.

California police chiefs dropped their opposition but sheriffs, who run jails where the biggest impacts will be felt, remain opposed.

"Public safety is enhanced when all law enforcement agencies can communicate freely with each other".

Democrats argued the bill would heighten public safety by building trust between undocumented immigrants and police, encouraging crime victims to come forward.

The legislation is the latest effort by Democratic lawmakers in California, home to an estimated 2.3 million immigrants without legal authorization, to create barriers to President Donald Trump's campaign pledge to step up deportation efforts.

But Republicans warned their colleagues that the legislation was risky and unnecessary, making it harder to deport criminals.
