Cuomo to visit US Virgin Islands to survey damage

Cuomo to visit US Virgin Islands to survey damage”

Besides dispatches from residents on St. John trickling in sporadically on various Facebook pages and blogs, information about emergency response efforts on the Caribbean island had been spotty at best immediately following Hurricane Irma this week.

Residents in the larger St. Thomas are anxious food supplies could run low before they are replenished.

"The village where I live is devastated", said Dominique Olive from French Town on St. Thomas' southern coast.

"Please come out this weekend and join us for a good meal or a drink to help support the people of the Virgin Islands", said Grapski.

"Basically, life-saving commodities is what we are getting in there", he said.

The governor of the islands said the prisoners of Balsam Ghut prison, in Tortola, had been captured on Thursday. Utility officials warned it could take 10 days or more for power to be fully restored.

One of the women is British, one Guyanese, two of the children are US citizens and the others have valid US visitor visas, Thomas said, but the US authorities will not let them travel to the US Virgin Islands.

The governor's office said Cuomo will visit the USA territory in the Caribbean on Friday.

Mapp said President Donald Trump is expected to visit the Islands within a week. Anyone who goes from the BVI to the US VI in these circumstances does not want to stay there.

Hurricane Irma lashed St. Thomas and St. John with winds of 150 mph for more than four hours when the storm hit September 6.

In the U.S. Virgin Islands, damage was particularly widespread on St. John, an island of stunning natural beauty that is mostly national park surrounded by coral reefs. The water supply in Havana, the capital, was affected because of damage to the electrical system.

"I've learned that numerous islanders are walking around neighborhoods smelling for cooking and pleading for the kindness of strangers", said Grapski. "We're going to rebuild".
