Facebook gives investigators new details on Russian ads”

Facebook gave special counsel Robert Mueller more records on Russian ad purchases than it provided to Congress last week, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter.

The information, including copies of ads and details about accounts that bought them, was shared with special counsel Robert Mueller, the late Friday report said citing people familiar with matter.

A TechCrunch report said, "It's likely that Facebook was compelled to turn over the information because the investigating team received a search warrant".

The ads and accounts appeared to focus on amplifying divisive social and political messages across the ideological spectrum, touching on topics from LGBT matters to race issues to immigration to gun rights, the social networking giant had earlier said. The information provided to Congress included copies of the ads and buyers' identities.

In those briefings, Facebook spoke only in generalities about the ad buys, leaving some committee members feeling frustrated with Facebook's level of cooperation.

The Senate Intelligence Committee also hasn't ruled out subpoenaing Facebook officials to publicly testify about how Russian Federation may have used the social media platform to influence the 2016 election, a person familiar with the investigation told the Journal. Over 5,000 ads were run from these groups, according to Facebook. It is even possible that unidentified ad buys may still exist on the social media network today. The Department of Justice didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
