Gulf crisis boils over at Cairo meeting

Gulf crisis boils over at Cairo meeting”

The diplomatic crisis, the worst since the 1990 invasion of Kuwait by Iraq and the subsequent Persian Gulf War, has seen the Arab nations cut ties to Qatar, which hosts a major USA military base and will be the host of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

As a result of the Saudi lead bloc voting to enact the restrictions in June, Qatar had seen its only land border closed, a ban on all ships flying its flag from most ports, and a large swathe of the Persian Gulf's airspace closed to both Qatari aircraft as well as foreign carriers destined for Doha.

"Endangering national unity, obstructing the constitution or its articles, or harming the reputation of the state is a terrorist crime", the first tweet read.

While it is facing steep social and economic costs, Qatar has denied all of the allegations coming from the coalition of four, and has refused to comply with demands from the group.

Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani will hold talks in Ankara on Thursday with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, an ally of Doha in its dispute with Gulf Arab neighbours.

The blockading states also have accused Doha of supporting regional rival, Iran. But this time, there was a new twist in the dispute: Some of the invective, though carefully couched in diplomatic niceties, was directed at Kuwait.

Muraikhi's remarks sparked angry reactions from Ahmed al-Qattan, Saudi Arabia's envoy to the Arab League, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and Emirati State Minister for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash, with the Qatari minister and Qattan even telling each other to "be quiet".

He added that "the coming days will prove them wrong because we know that the Qatari people will never accept the Iranians to play a role in Qatar".

He further criticized what he called Qatar's "historic support" for terrorism and extremist factions.

UAE's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash said the Gulf crisis continued "due to Qatar's unwillingness for peace".

Israel's neighbors in the Middle East continue to sling mud at one another in their quarrel over Qatar. However, Mr Muraikhi used his opening speech...

The exchange then descended into a row between Kattan and Muraikhi, with each telling the other to be quiet.

Moreover, Shoukry rejected Muraikhi's comments as "unacceptable" and "baseless insults".

Qatar backed a democratically-elected Muslim Brotherhood government in Egypt before it was overthrown by the military in 2013.
