Lazio president Lotito seeks De Vrij compromise over Liverpool, Juventus interest”

Virgil van Dijk was Jurgen Klopp's preferred target but after Southampton threatened to report the Reds for an illegal approach towards the Dutchman, Liverpool were forced to abandon their pursuit for the time being.

A familiar name in the summer transfer window looks set to become even more familiar in 2018 with reports suggesting that both Juventus and Liverpool will make a January move for Lazio's Dutch global defender Stefan de Vrij. The arrival of Benedikt Howedes on a loan deal is only a temporary solution and Bianconeri boss Massimo Allegri is believed to have made de Vrij a priority for January.

With De Vrij's current deal expiring at the end of the campaign, the Biancocelesti are desperate to tie him down to a longer contract as the fear of losing him on a free transfer looms. They want to set the release clause at €30million, but De Vrij wants the release clause to be lower than that.

The player is open to signing a new deal but on his conditions.

The 25-year-old told reporters last night that he and the club were on "very good terms" ahead of the negotiations.

According to Il Corriere dello Sport, sporting director Igli Tare will meet the player's entourage in Rome in the coming days in a bid to thrash out a new 12-month contract.

De Vrij has featured in all five of Lazio's matches this season, including their three Serie A games.
