Nebraska trails Northern Illinois at the half

Nebraska trails Northern Illinois at the half”

When one combines those pick-sixes - one from 87 yards out, the other from 25 - Lee had almost accounted for more passing yardage to the opposing defense than he had for Nebraska's offense.

Lee finished the first half 15-of-26 for 147 yards and two interceptions.

Junior running back Mikale Wilbon has been sound in his first career start, posting career highs in both carries in yards. The Huskers concerns right now are on defense, as Nebraska is allowing 531.5 yards per game this season, including 390 yards per game through the air.

After watching his team show the worst and best of itself at OR last weekend, Nebraska coach Mike Riley told reporters his players "should be sick" about losing an opportunity to pick up a key win.

The Huskers were cruising on its first drive with relative ease until a second-and-3 from the 10-yard line. Lee just managed to get the pass away, but regretted it as the rushed throw found Jawuan Johnson who returned it unabated for 25 yards and a score.

The second pick-six thrown by Lee was worse, as Lee unwisely tried to throw the football as he was being taken to the turf.

Entering Saturday as the most penalized team in the country, averaging 132 penalty yards through Week 2, Northern Illinois was penalty-less in the opening half. NIU had just 88 total yards of offense in 15 minutes of play. It's not entirely clear why Tanner Lee was so off his game in the first half, but Husker fans are definitely seeking some big second-half changes. The Huskies were far from ideal, however, committing 15 penalties for 194 yards, while Hagan had field-goal attempts from 39 and 30 yards blocked. NIU has the Cornhuskers on upset alert as they took a 14-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Cornhuskers attempt to put together a more complete game and pick up some steam heading into Big Ten play Saturday when they host Northern Illinois. Redshirt freshman Marquel Dismuke recovered the ball at Nebraska's two-yard line, where Lee punched it in two plays later to cut the lead to 14-7.

A drive a short while later led to a 36-yard Drew Brown field goal, making it 14-10.

Northern Illinois then countered with a quick six-play drive to put the Huskies back up 21-17.
