PM tells envoy Pakistan and United States need to strengthen ties”

Pakistani Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi is set to attend the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in NY on Monday, the Foreign Ministry said here.

The prime minister, who is due in United States on Monday would also be meeting UN Secretary-General António Guterres and a number of other world leaders. The power demand and supply situation in the country was also reviewed during the meeting.

Meanwhile, the ambassadors of U.S. and Afghanistan, David Hale and Hazrat Umar Zakhilwal met Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi separately at the Prime Minister Office.

Talking to US Ambassador David Hale, who called on him at the PM House, Mr Abbasi said: "It is important for Pakistan and US to stay engaged for pursuing common objectives and other issues of mutual interest".

The Trump administration by maintaining threatening posture towards Islamabad is only helping Pakistan to balance its ties with Washington and tilt bit more towards Beijing and Moscow which are obviously more friendly and trustworthy and in the process achieve somewhat elusive self-reliance which is the dire need of the hour, to say the least.

It was agreed that the decades long relations between Pakistan and the USA should be further strengthened through multifaceted engagement.

During the meeting, the prime minister highlighted Pakistan's commitment for peace and stability in the region, Afghanistan in particular.

In his policy speech, Trump, while laying emphasise on the use of force to break the stalemate, accused Pakistan of supporting and harbouring the Afghan Taliban and the Haqqani Network.

Zakhilwal said the Afghan government is willing to improve bilateral relations with Pakistan. After assuming office, Prime Minister Abbasi visited Karachi and besides getting briefed on law and order situation also met political stakeholders in the port city. Heads of various distribution companies briefed the prime minister regarding overall performance of their respective organisations focusing on load management profile in their areas and the measures being taken to reduce line losses and improve recoveries. He also directed the DISCO chiefs to put in place a robust complaint management system in their respective organizations besides being more responsive to public representatives.
