Supreme Court issues notice on plea over safety of schoolkids”

A government advisory on the Blue Whale Challenge has asked parents to keep an eye on their children's social media activity.

A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud issued notices and sought the responses within three weeks from the Union Human Resources Ministry and all State Governments and Union Territories on the plea filed by two women lawyers, Abha R Sharma and Sangeeta Bharti.

The report told parents not to talk about the unsafe game "unless there is a reason to believe your child already knows of or has played the game" as discussing it may "increase the chance that your child will search for it on their own", NDTV reported. This online game, which encourages people to take part in it had become increasingly unsafe and harmful as "Once you enter you can not exit".

The workshop was addressed by Khurania in the presence of UNICEF child protection specialist L Nanda, IIT SES faculty P Bera, IIT system engineer Shanku Das, IIT student counselor Manisha Mishra and SCB Medical College Principal Dr Sidhartha Das along with Professors of various universities, Principals of different schools and colleges, parents and guardians. There is need to create awareness among youngsters not to participate in this game.

The Supreme Court will on Friday hear a plea seeking ban on the Blue Whale game. It advised on ensuring that the children are not engaged with the deadly game which led to a series of suicides in India and other countries.

The commissioner had said that many people were rescued from the fatal blue whale game and those rescued had admitted that they were lucky to survive. As the Centre had so far not taken steps to ban this game, he prayed for a direction to the Union of India to ban this game immediately.
