Gold for Kirchmann and Sunweb in team time trial world championship”

The team time trial is the only event of the world championships for trade teams to fly their colors.

Team Sky took bronze in the team time trial on the opening day of the UCI Road World Championships in Bergen, Norway, on Sunday as International Cycling Union president Brian Cookson predicted that he would comfortably secure a second term as the head of cycling's world governing body when voting takes place on Thursday. Sunweb posted 43:02 at the second checkpoint, stamping their class on the race, but the six women of Boels Doman would be quicker by them than 12 whole seconds; The early pace of Cervelo Bigla would take its toll, as they were now 16 seconds off Sunweb.

They finished the course in a time of 47:50.42 to take the world title. When Team Sunweb crossed the line, they had set a new best time of 55:41.63 and had caught and passed the team that started in front of them.

"We may not be the best time trial team on paper but with this team anything is possible".

Sky, who were down from six to four men 11 km from the finish when Geraint Thomas and Owain Doull could not follow the pace of their team mates, took bronze, 22.35 off the pace.

In the women's race, defending champions Boels Dolman were denied back-to-back crowns by a sensational ride from the Sunweb squad. They would need to be ideal over the final couple kilometers to become back-to-back world champions. However, with 4 kilometers to go Boels-Dolmans had faded and were even on time with Team Sunweb.

Team Sunweb showed they paced the course flawlessly on Sunday with Boels-Dolmans unable to match their second-half speed and having to settle for the silver medal in 2017.

"None of us really expected this - we were going for the podium", said Ellen van Dijk of Sunweb.

To Virtu's credit, they would stay intact over the final climb and claw back a great deal of respectability to finish with a time of 58:33.15, a disappointing day overall for them but still a good margin faster than Be Pink, who finished 1:15 and 2:07 up on HiTech Products. That was our strength today, and we used each other's strengths in a really good way. "It was incredible to win like that".
