Shogun Rua is out, Ovince Saint Preux gets a new opponent”

MMA Today was the first to report the story. Okami will step into the main event of UFC Japan (UFC Fight Night 117) next week; the event goes down September 23 in Saitama, Japan.

Former light heavyweight champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua has suffered a knee injury, which forced him out of the headlining fight next weekend. Preux in the main event, and the UFC is allegedly weighing their options when it comes to potential opponents.

Since then, the 36-year-old Okami has taken on the role of a roving prize fighter, his record of 5-2 over the past four years including bouts with the World Series of Fighting (now known as the Professional Fighters League), Deep and Pancrase.

The news was confirmed during the UFC Fight Night broadcast from Pittsburgh on Saturday night.

Despite being on a 3-1 run at the time, Okami was released by the UFC after a single loss to Jacare Souza at UFC Fight Night 28, a move that shocked fans and pundits alike.

As for Saint Preux, the former interim title challenger is coming off a submission win over Marcos Rogério de Lima.

However, the UFC have managed to find a worthy replacement on short notice, with a familiar face now set to return to the Octagon in the shape of Yushin Okami. He faced the likes of former middleweight champions Rich Franklin and Evan Tanner before being given a title shot against then-champion Anderson Silva at UFC 134, losing to the Brazilian by TKO in the second round.
