'Strong possibility' of racial motivation in Baton Rouge killings, police say”

A Baton Rouge Police Department spokesman says the person who was brought in for questioning in connection to two shootings that may be related has not been charged in connection to the case, but was arrested on unrelated drug charges.

He was subsequently charges with possession of a schedule I drug and possession and manufacturing of a schedule III drug. Authorities do not yet have enough evidence to charge him with murder, Baton Rouge Sgt. L'Jean McKneely told The Associated Press.

McKneely said shell casings from each killing matched, and a auto belonging to Gleason fit the description of the vehicle police were seeking. He said police have collected even more evidence that he will not release at this time due to it being an ongoing investigation.

Dawson says police believe the shooting was targeted. The second victim, Smart, was on his way to work when he was shot and killed, according to The Advocate.

It wasn't immediately clear if Gleason had an attorney or when his first court appearance would be.

According to local outlet WBRZ, Gleason was arrested after authorities searched his apartment Saturday night and found human growth hormones - for which he did not have a prescription - and 9 grams of marijuana. After Gleason was read his Miranda rights, he claimed ownership of the drugs, the document said.
