Vettel, Raikkonen and Verstappen escape punishment after Singapore crash

Vettel, Raikkonen and Verstappen escape punishment after Singapore crash”

A first lap accident involving Sebastian Vettel, Max Verstappen and Kimi Raikkonenen however, ensured that Hamilton took the lead in the race following a strong start from the Briton.

Red Bull's Australian Daniel Ricciardo was in second place as the safety auto was deployed.

The Briton was promoted into the lead of the race when Vettel - who also got caught up in the opening lap clash - lost control of his Ferrari and spun into the wall on the exit of Turn 3 and retired. "I'm trying", he said afterwards. "Fantastic job with the team strategy", Hamilton said over the radio, before leaping out of his vehicle and hugging his engineers.

"So there's two, for sure, opportunities and then one potential one if there is a safety auto", he said.

"To come to a track that was potentially our weakest circuit, and come away with a win like this and those points, it's really such a fortunate scenario.so I definitely have a skip in my step".

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton of Britain sits in his vehicle following the third practice session at the Singapore Formula One Grand Prix on the Marina Bay City Circuit Singapore, Saturday, Sept. 16, 2017.

This is the first abandonment of the season for the German.

All three drivers - Verstappen, Vettel and Raikkonen - face a stewards inquiry after the race.

Vettel's withdrawal allowed Lewis Hamilton in to seal his third win in a row and take a 28-point lead in the championship race.

Lewis Hamilton believed he could claim an unlikely Singapore Grand Prix victory as soon as rain started to fall in the build-up to the race.

The incident, in which Fernando Alonso was collateral damage after a brilliant start, brought out the Safety Car.

Having built on that advantage, championship leader Hamilton was frustrated by the reappearance of the safety auto on lap 11 when Daniil Kvyat drove into the barriers. The two other retirements - both with technical problems - were Nico Hulkenberg, who had at one point looked set for fourth for Renault, and Haas's Kevin Magnussen.

The FIA said it will investigate the collision after the race.
