Almost 1.9 million still without power in US Southeast after Irma

Almost 1.9 million still without power in US Southeast after Irma”

In Puerto Rico, hundreds of thousands of people remain without power.

Millions of Florida residents are without power after Hurricane Irma devastated the state's power grid, according to The Weather Channel.

Rob Gould, the utility company's chief communications officer, said they did not expect to have the power fully back on in Miami-Dade specifically until Tuesday.

The governor's office said "power restoration crews have been working around the clock" for what it called "the largest power restoration undertaking in history for a single state". "Now we are literally into the house-to-house combat mode". The death toll from the storm also rose in the Caribbean, where at least 34 people are confirmed dead.

A total of eight others died in Georgia and the Carolinas. Most of those deaths were the result of either medical issues as they prepared for the storm or carbon monoxide poisoning.

Eight elderly people died earlier this week after being exposed to the heat inside a nursing home north of Miami that had been left without full air conditioning after the hurricane hit.

Florida Power & Light, the state's major electricity provider, has almost 20,000 workers deployed around the state. Nursing homes, shelters, major thoroughfares are priorities.

Restoration teams continue to face challenges including downed trees, blocked roads and bridges that had be inspected by the state following flooding.

FPL, the state's largest utility, said its outages dipped to around 2.5 million customers by Tuesday evening from a peak of more than 3.6 million on Monday morning, but that was still more than half of its customers.

But it was not until multiple patients began experiencing health emergencies, which promoted the evacuation of the center, that the utility company arrived to make the fix, the nursing home said.

The state's gas supplies were severely disrupted before and during the storm as ports were closed, cutting Florida off from waterborne deliveries the state relies on.

According to the state Emergency Operations Center, Broward and Orange counties had the highest number of storm-related fatalities with five each.
