Dubai to operate world's largest solar power project

Dubai to operate world's largest solar power project”

Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park sits around 50 km (31 mi) south of Dubai and its first phase was inaugurated back in 2013.

The CSP project will be implemented by Dubai Water and Electricity Authority (Dewa).

The AED-14.2-billion (USD 3.86bn/EUR 3.23bn) park will use a 260-metre (853 ft) tower, touted as the tallest of its kind in the world, in combination with parabolic trough CSP.

The utility has revealed that the bid placed by the consortium of Saudi Arabia's ACWA Power and China-based Shanghai Electric was the lowest levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) at 7.3 cents per kilowatt hour (kW/h).

The facility will be built and operated under the independent power producer (IPP) model and will be completed in several stages, with commissioning slated to begin from the fourth quarter of 2020 onwards.

What is set to be the world's largest single-site solar park is getting a little larger, with the government of Dubai approving a 700-MW extension to the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park.

"The carbon footprint of Dubai will be the lowest in the world by 2030", Sheikh Mohammed added.

"The awarding of this strategic project supports the vision of Sheikh Mohammed to promote sustainability and make Dubai a global centre for clean energy and a green economy".

According to the plans of the authorities of Dubai, the share of alternative energy sources in the total energy system of the emirate is expected to reach 25% by 2030 and become the main source of energy (75%) only in another 20 years.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan toured the centre accompanied by Minister of State for Youth Affairs Shamma bint Sohail Faris Al Mazrui who supervised the centre's development, in cooperation with the country's other youth centres.

"Our focus on renewable energy generation has led to a drop in prices worldwide and has lowered the price of solar power bids in Europe and the Middle East".
