Intel collaborates with Waymo on self-driving compute design

Intel collaborates with Waymo on self-driving compute design”

Waymo-the Google self-driving project that spun out to become a business under Alphabet-said Monday it's using Intel chips as part of a compute platform that allows its self-driving Chrysler Pacifica hybrid minivans to process huge amounts of data so it can make decisions in real time while navigating city streets. In fact, through its work with Waymo, which began back in 2009 when it was still Google's Self-Driving Car program, Intel's chips have helped process data for Waymo resulting from more cumulative autonomous miles driven than any other test fleet now in operation.

Underscoring the non-exclusive partnerships and collaborations in the space, Mobileye and Intel are in an alliance with German automaker BMW and Fiat-Chrysler to create an industry-wide autonomous auto platform.

Waymo has prided itself on designing every aspect of its self-driving vehicles, particularly their eyes, ears, and brains.

Waymo has made a point of going in-house for the core technology of its self-driving system, which is something it has talked about specifically around its sensor suite in the past. "The Pacifica minivans are equipped with our latest generation of custom-built radar, lidar and visions systems and an all-new AI compute platform, so they can see even further and sharper".

"Building cars and testing them in real-world conditions provides immediate feedback and will accelerate delivery of technologies and solutions for highly and fully autonomous vehicles", said Mobileye co-founder Amnon Shashua, who is to run the unit for Intel. Intel says that its advanced processing power will handle the demands of level 4 and 5 autonomy for vehicles. With so much life-saving potential, it's a rapid transformation that Intel is excited to be at the forefront of along with other industry leaders like Waymo. "By working closely with Waymo, Intel can offer Waymo's fleet of vehicles the advanced processing power required for level 4 and 5 autonomy". In addition to working with Intel, Waymo's other major outside partnership has been with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.

While Waymo has made use of Intel tech in some form or another for almost a decade, their most recent collaboration brought the two companies closer together, Waymo tells me.

Level 4 autonomy is a designation by the SAE that means the vehicle takes over all of the driving in certain conditions.
