Iran, Pakistan call for facilities to help Rohingya Muslims

Iran, Pakistan call for facilities to help Rohingya Muslims”

The event was organized by former Concordia student Majed Jam, who said his primary goals were to inspire action and raise awareness about the plight of the Rohingya.

Refugee camps near Bangladesh's border with Myanmar already had about 300,000 Rohingya before the upsurge in violence last month and are now overwhelmed.

"There's little clean water, we've seen people fighting over money, over food, it's undignified, and it's catastrophic really".

The refugees began pouring from Myanmar's Rakhine state after a Rohingya insurgent group launched attacks on security posts August 25, prompting Myanmar's military to launch "clearance operations" to root out the rebels.

Bangladesh has for decades faced influxes of Rohingya fleeing persecution in Buddhist-majority Myanmar, where the Rohingya are regarded as illegal migrants.

Since late August over 400,000 Rohingyas have fled to Bangladesh from Myanmar to escape a government offensive, according to United Nations estimates.

She told the BBC in an interview earlier this year: "I don't think there is ethnic cleansing going on".

A human rights expert in Cox's Bazar urged the government to shut local schools for three days to allow the Rohingya to camp in them. The global community should take meaningful action to stop the killing and exodus of the Rohingya and then hold the guilty accountable. But inside Myanmar the army is riding a new wave of support from a public that has incubated hatred against the Rohingya for years.

The Myanmar government has accused global aid workers as assisting terrorists.

"Measles is a very infectious and risky disease during emergencies, especially for children who are already weak and malnourished", added Edouard Beigbeder, the head of UNICEF in Bangladesh.

Human Rights Watch said satellite imagery showed 62 Rohingya villages had been torched in an orchestrated campaign.

Existing refugee camps are full and the new arrivals are sleeping rough in whatever space they can find, reports say.

The Myanmar government "and State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi in particular, should condemn unequivocally all incitement to racial or religious hatred and combat social discrimination and hostilities against the Rohingya minority", said the resolution.

She is due to make her first address to the nation on the crisis on Tuesday.

"Bangladesh expressed deep concern at the repetition of such acts of provocation and demanded that Myanmar takes immediate measures to ensure that such violation of sovereignty does not occur again", the ministry said in statement late on Friday.

One woman arrived with her leg blown off, apparently in a landmine explosion on the Myanmar side.
